The reviews for Sonic Frontiers are a mix of enthusiasm for its music and open-world exploration, acknowledgment of attempts at innovation and new mechanics, and criticism for technical performance issues and repetitive gameplay. Players appreciate the fresh take on the Sonic series but express disappointment in areas like story development and some level designs. The game's music stands out as a universally praised element, enhancing the experience, while the new open-world format divides opinions on its effectiveness and execution.

Positive Points

The game's open-world format has been praised for providing a new, expansive environment that offers freedom of exploration, adding a fresh dimension to the series.

The music, including both the soundtrack and boss fight music, is consistently mentioned as a standout feature, often described as phenomenal and adds to the overall experience.

Combat mechanics, particularly during boss fights, have been appreciated for being engaging and bringing a new layer of depth to the gameplay.

The game successfully blends elements of nostalgic Sonic gameplay with new, innovative features, making it appealing to both long-time fans and newcomers.

Negative Points

The game is often criticized for its technical issues, including bugs, camera problems, and pop-in graphics, which detract from the immersive experience.

Some players found the open-world design to be repetitive and filled with busywork, which can become tedious over time.

The story and character dialogue have received mixed reviews, with some considering it dull or underdeveloped compared to past Sonic games.

The final boss fight and certain sections of gameplay are seen as unsatisfactory or overly difficult due to poor mechanics and guidance.

Mixed Points

The open-world structure itself is seen as a double-edged sword: while providing freedom and new possibilities, it can also feel empty or lacking purposeful content.

The game has shown ambition and potential for further Sonic titles, but execution in certain areas, such as level design and pacing, seems unpolished.

Common Themes

Players consistently highlight the game's musical score as one of its best features, enhancing the overall mood and atmosphere.

The open-world and freedom of exploration is a prominent theme, with opinions ranging from it being a transformative approach for the franchise to feeling like it lacks substance.

Technical performance issues are a recurring theme, with many reviews mentioning problems like pop-in graphics and framerate drops.

The balance between new and traditional elements—how the game stays true to Sonic's roots while attempting innovation—is a frequent point of discussion.
