Overall, the sentiment around Wartales is positive for its strategic depth and immersive medieval setting. However, there are significant technical issues that players encounter, affecting game stability, particularly on the Steam Deck. The game's repetitive nature is often mentioned as a point of criticism, alongside concerns regarding the pricing and necessity of multiple DLCs for a complete experience. Despite these issues, many players find enjoyment in the freedom of exploration and complexity of character management, making it a worthwhile experience for those who appreciate the genre.

Positive Points

Players commend the game's engaging tactical turn-based combat system, allowing for strategic depth in battles.

The open-world exploration gives a sense of freedom, with a variety of quests and areas to discover.

Players appreciate the character development and party management, fostering a connection with mercenaries and a personalized mercenary group.

The atmosphere and art style are praised for effectively creating a gritty, medieval setting that immerses the player.

The inclusion of various mechanics such as crafting, resource management, and professions adds depth to the gameplay.

Negative Points

The game suffers from technical issues like crashes, memory leaks, and performance stutters, especially on the Steam Deck.

Combat and gameplay can become repetitive over time, with similar quests and enemy types, reducing long-term engagement.

Some players criticize the abundance and pricing of DLCs, feeling that necessary content is gated behind paywalls.

The lack of a strong central narrative or story progression is a common criticism, resulting in a less engaging role-playing experience.

Mixed Points

While some players find the challenging difficulty satisfying, others find it frustrating and unbalanced.

The cooperative multiplayer mode is enjoyed by many, but technical issues and gameplay pacing can hinder the experience.

The game's survival and resource management elements are engaging for some, but can also be perceived as tedious by others.

Common Themes

Wartales is frequently compared to games like XCOM, Battle Brothers, and Mount & Blade due to its strategic combat and management gameplay.

The game's medieval setting and aesthetic receive consistent praise for creating an immersive experience.

Players often discuss the game's replay value, highlighting both the numerous mechanics and the repetitive nature of some elements.

The development team's continued updates and expansions are noted, though there is mixed reception regarding their approach to DLC content.
