Overall, players find the climbing mechanics and aesthetics of Cairn to be exceptional, resonating particularly well with those who have an interest in climbing. However, technical issues and the protagonist's character frequently detract from the experience. Opinions on survival elements and the narrative are divided, with some appreciating their depth and others finding them distracting. Despite these criticisms, Cairn is regarded as a powerful, unique gaming experience with a strong emotional core.

Positive Points

The game's art style and visual presentation are consistently praised, adding significant depth and beauty to the climbing experience.

Climbing mechanics are well-executed, offering a realistic and immersive experience that resonates particularly with real-life climbers.

The soundtrack and sound design are received positively, augmenting the emotional and atmospheric depth of the game.

The game offers a rewarding sense of accomplishment and progress, especially when successfully navigating difficult climbs.

Story and environmental storytelling provide an engaging narrative that blends seamlessly with the gameplay.

Negative Points

Many players report significant performance issues, particularly on certain hardware setups like AMD graphics cards and the Steam Deck.

The protagonist, Aava, is often cited as unlikable due to her perceived attitude and reactions, detracting from player immersion.

Automatic limb selection in the climbing mechanics is often criticized for making non-intuitive choices, leading to unnecessary failures.

Mixed Points

The survival mechanics, including hunger and thirst, receive mixed feedback. Some find it adds depth to the gameplay, while others feel it is more of a hindrance.

The narrative, while engaging for some, is considered by others to be melodramatic or forced, particularly in its portrayal of the protagonist's journey.

Common Themes

The combination of story and gameplay elements creates a meditative and challenging experience that is both rewarding and occasionally stressful.

Despite the challenges, the game evokes a strong emotional response, often leaving players reflective upon their journey.
