Overall, the sentiment around the Steam release of Resident Evil (1996) is nostalgic but marred by technical shortcomings. Fans of the original game appreciate its long-awaited availability on Steam and the nostalgia it evokes. However, the unnecessary DRM and issues with controller support lead to frustration, especially for Linux and Steam Deck users. Despite these drawbacks, the game's campy charm and status as a genre-defining classic earn it enduring respect and appreciation from long-time fans.

Positive Points

The game's release on Steam allows for easy access to a classic title that defined the survival horror genre.

Players appreciate the authenticity and nostalgia of revisiting the original uncensored and extended FMVs.

The addition of new features like 360-degree tank controls and door skipping enhance the playability and speedrunning appeal.

Nostalgic elements such as classic dialogue and voice acting add charm and enjoyment for those familiar with the original.

Negative Points

The game includes unnecessary DRM, which many players find intrusive and problematic, especially on Linux and Steam Deck.

There are numerous complaints about poor controller support and issues with the Steam Deck compatibility.

Graphics and sound quality are considered outdated and there are minimal improvements over older PC versions.

Lack of achievements and other Steam features like trading cards disappoints many players looking for a more complete Steam experience.

Mixed Points

While some players enjoy the campiness and dated presentation, others find the voice acting and visuals laughably bad, affecting the overall experience.

The tank controls are divisive; some players appreciate the challenge, while others find them cumbersome and outdated.

Common Themes

Nostalgia is a strong theme, with many players expressing joy at revisiting a game from their childhood.

Comparison to the GOG version is frequent, with players often finding the GOG version superior due to fewer technical and DRM-related issues.

Despite its flaws, Resident Evil remains a beloved classic that has defined a genre and holds a special place in the hearts of many players.
